3D printing in art

Art and 3D printing?

Why not! It has been foreseeable for a long time that additive manufacturing of components will not only find increasing approval in industry, but also in many other areas. One of the main drivers for 3DBAVARIA is to turn projects and ideas into reality - regardless of their use. Even if our focus is meanwhile on the implementation of technical applications, we are all the more pleased that we were able to offer an attractive solution in this case as well.

This year we had the pleasure of accompanying a project in the artistic field. The artist Thomas A. Hollbach approached us with the idea of self-designed picture frames. For their individual creation, he needed a final negative mold made of silicone, in which he then wanted to cast the picture frames made of synthetic resin. For this negative mold, a positive was first necessary as a 3D print. Due to the size (1050 x 705 x 23mm), only the FDM process came into question for this task. This method is particularly suitable for inexpensive, geometrically simple and voluminous components. In order to be able to fix the picture in the frame later, Mr. Hollbach also makes his own small spacers on his private 3D printer.

After the silicone mold was molded with our 3D printing component, Mr. Hollbach was able to pour the unique picture frames with epoxy resin and various filling materials such as feathers or flowers. The result can be admired in the following picture:

The artist Thomas A. Hollbach himself about the picture frames:

“I am a freelance artist in the field of oil painting. My works are figurative, mainly portraits in which doubt, self-acceptance and beliefs play a central role. A successful work can only work as a whole, the picture frame is crucial for the appearance of the picture. After an unsuccessful search for individual picture frames on the market, I made the decision that something of my own had to be created in order to meet my requirements."

We are already enthusiastic about the uniquely designed frames, which give the already special pictures another extraordinary touch. See for yourself how the frames are made in the following video by the artist:
