3D design tools for your 3D printing data

Find the right program for your 3D print model

If you want to have parts 3D printed, you first need 3D printing data. You can get this either by creating a model with a 3D scan, or by using a 3D design tool. On this page you will find an overview of some of the most common tools.

Fusion 360

Fusion 360 is a cloud-based software platform for modeling, CAD, CAM, CAE and PCB in 3D for product design and manufacturing. It gives you the ability to design and develop products to your specifications for aesthetics, form, fit and function. Fusion 360 is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems. A version with basic features is available for free to individuals working on non-commercial design and manufacturing projects.

FreeCAD

FreeCAD is designed for a wide variety of applications, including product design, mechanical engineering and architecture. This free open-source 3D modeler offers you the possibility to first create 2D sketches, which you can then use as a basis for the construction of other objects. Parametric modeling also allows you to easily modify your design by going back into the model history and changing the parameters. FreeCAD is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux.

Blender

Blender is a free open source 3D graphics suite. The entire 3D pipeline is supported - from modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, to compositing and motion tracking. The software runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Rhinoceros

Also known as Rhino, this software has a variety of complex 3D modeling tools that let you edit, analyze, document, render, animate, and translate. The program uses NURBS modeling, which allows any curves and surfaces to be represented very precisely. The current version, Rhino 7, is available for Windows and Mac for a price of €995.

SolidWorks

SolidWorks CAD software is based on parametric design and is primarily suitable for creating 3D models and assemblies. Modularization into individual steps also makes it possible to edit earlier work steps at any time. The software is compatible with Windows and the standard license can be purchased for €6,600 with an annual maintenance fee of €1,500.

3D design tool cinema 4D

Cinema 4D

The Cinema 4D software solution is suitable for 3D modeling, animation, simulation and rendering. One advantage of this software is the good connectivity with other programs. For example, vector graphics from Adobe Illustrator or PDF and SVG files can be opened and edited directly in Cinema 4D. Cinema 4D is compatible with Windows and Mac and can be purchased by individuals as an annual subscription at a price of € 736.77.
